SAE International Launches Effort to Address Standards for Natural Gas Vehicles

SAE International has taken steps to add another layer of confidence to the rapidly expanding natural gas vehicle (NGV) marketplace by addressing shortfalls in codes and standards to ensure the highest levels of safety, reliability and performance. Various forecasts show that the demand for natural gas as a transportation fuel will grow substantially, reaching over 2 billion cubic feet per day by 2020.
“The use of natural gas as a transportation fuel is extremely important,” said Ron Eickelman, President of California-based Agility Fuel Systems, commenting on the North American market. “All indicators point to increase in the number of vehicles fueled by natural gas. To achieve universal levels of safety, reliability, and performance, there is no question that codes and improved standards are needed now!”
Eickelman explained to NGV Global News that issues can arise on a regional level within countries, on a national level as well as globally. For instance, gas quality and composition, and the lack of expiration dates on Type I cylinders, are but two examples of global issues that need attention. In the US there are no national codes that address either CNG or LNG systems on heavy duty vehicles. “Additionally, there is a major gap in the standards as to how the fuel systems should perform,” Eickelman added.
At the SAE 2013 Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress, held in October in Rosemont, Ill., industry participants in a Blue Ribbon Panel on natural gas were unanimous in their belief that standards will help the industry to quicker embrace the natural gas based technologies.
In response to the heavy-duty trucking industry need, SAE International Truck and Bus Council launched an effort to establish relevant SAE standards.
